Entrepreneur Profile: On the Spot
Thomas O’Hearn has always had a passion for automobiles. After buying his first car, he began to do detail work on it. During his high school years, he formally learned automobile detailing while working at various BMW dealerships. He had dreams of starting his own mobile detailing service, but never had the tools or resources to do so. After taking part in the 2015 EforAll Winter Accelerator, he officially launched On the Spot. We recently sat down with Thomas to talk about his venture.
What is On the Spot?
On the Spot specializes in on-site automobile detailing and cleaning. We detail your car on the spot, whether that’s at your home or office. We offer a professional level of service, and is the only company of it’s kind in the Greater Lowell area.
Why are you passionate about it?
I am passionate about the auto world in so many ways, as a spectator, a participant, and also now as a professional detailer. I detailed cars for friends and family but never thought about putting it together as a business. I really enjoyed working on beautiful cars and restoring them to their former glory, not to mention maintaining their value.
Why did you decide to start On the Spot?
On the Spot had always been an idea floating around in my head, I had always wanted to start a venture and work for myself. The whole idea of working for myself and expressing my own interests really appealed to me. I really saw an opportunity for myself, and decided to go after it. I also quickly realized that there was already a demand out there for such a service. I was hoping to turn a life long passion into my first start-up. Upon hearing of EforAll and being introduced to the organization through one of the pitch contests, I decided to give it a shot.
How did the EforAll Pitch Contest/Accelerator help?
With the money I received from the All Ideas Pitch Contest, and only a few weeks into the accelerator, I had managed to service my first big customer (11 trucks for Valley Green Landscaping) and managed to generate profit. I was amazed! That wouldn’t have happened with out the ideas, funding, resources, and support I received from EforAll. Meeting on a regular basis with spirited and like-minded entrepreneurs (classmates, mentors, or industry experts) really motivated me and pushed me forward. Not to mention I received priceless amounts of advice and even made many friends! I had no business sense before I entered the program, however I was committed to making it happen, the accelerator showed me the path.
What locations are you in now? Where do you hope to be in a few years with your business?
On the Spot will have two locations coming this spring. I will serve the tenants at 60 Island St and 25 Marston St in Lawrence, MA. I have established a great relationship with Bell Tower Management and look forward to working in the Lawrence area. Once I have established a customer base in those areas I plan on opening another site in Lowell, I have my eyes on a few different professional centers. I am also doing mobile detailing at homes and offices (appointment only).
What’s the long term-goal for On the Spot?
I hope to be able to grow On the Spot into a statewide business. If I could have ten “Spots” established in two years I would consider that an achievement. Ten locations would require that I employ roughly twenty people.
Why should other entrepreneurs join EforAll?
I really considered myself a “wantrepreneur” before I was introduced to the EforAll community. I was full of so many ideas, I just never had the means to turn them into reality. Gaining access to a community of supportive and accomplished entrepreneurs opened my world in so many ways. I gained invaluable insight and advice that has advanced my business model in some new and real exciting directions. With connections I was able to make through the community I have established On the Spot in a much greater way than I had imagined. As an EforAll alumni I can confidently say, I am an entrepreneur!
